The documentary’s premiere screening is scheduled to take place Sunday, October 20, at 6:45 p.m. ET at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, New York. According to a description of the movie on the festival’s website, Coastal is a “personal, behind-the-scenes doc [that] … gives an intimate view of the maverick musician” during his 2023 solo trek. The film captures Young’s “everyday observations on the [tour] bus [and] his candid banter with his audience.”

Young also shared some details about the documentary in a recent update posted on his Neil Young Archives website.

“I love this film about life and music on the road,” he wrote. “It features exactly that—real life on the road in our bus, onstage, backstage… a documentary full of the soul and art I love [in] Daryl. Something not to miss. Coming this fall and through the year to theaters, for a night, and your life forever.”

Other News from Young

In his aforementioned post on his website, Young shared a variety of news tidbits in addition to discussing the documentary.

Neil revealed that he recently wrote a new song called “Silver Eagle.”

He also reported that he’s in the process of finishing his first-ever novel, a sci-fi book titled Canary.

As Young noted, “[The book is] in its final go through before circulation to a few chosen publishers, who will soon be reading the first 100+ pages of this 350 page writing, I started in 2016 or so. That will be so exciting to me!”

Neil also shared that he’s working on a book of lyrics that will feature the words to “650 or so” of his songs, as well as his personal comments about each tune.

“[I’m] currently in the post-Harvest period,” he reported. “This is gigantic, a lot of fun and writing, remembering these times as a late 70’s flower child. Like I’m 78 going on 79 and these songs are 50 years ago or so. Quite an experience!”

Other projects on which Young said he’s working include 50th-anniversary vinyl versions of his albums Tonight’s the Night and Zuma. Neil revealed that he’s “finding out-takes to be included [and] preparing the vinyl sides for mastering.”

In addition, Young reported that he’s “deep into” putting together the fourth volume of his expansive Neil Young Archives series of box sets.

Young’s 2024 Performance Plans

Young currently has four upcoming concerts on his 2024 itinerary. First up is a performance at the 2024 Farm Aid benefit concert, scheduled for this Saturday, September 21, in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Neil also will play two shows at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, on September 23 and 24. Young will be backed at the gigs by a group called The Chrome Hearts, which feature members of the band Promise of the Real.

Lastly, Young will headline the Harvest Moon: A Gathering benefit show on October 5 in Lake Hughes, California. The event, which also will feature Stephen Stills, John Mayer, and other artists, raises money for The Painted Turtle camp and The Bridge School.
