Neil Young Announces Two New Theater Shows with Backing Group The Chrome Hearts, Featuring Promise of the Real Members

During a recent Zoom conference for members of his official website, Neil Young revealed that he was planning to play a new series of theater concerts soon at which he’d be backed by some members of Promise of the Real, the roots-rock band led by Willie Nelson’s son Lukas. Now, Young has confirmed two new shows that will indeed feature him accompanied by some Promise of the Real members.

The concerts are scheduled for September 23 and 24 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. At the gigs, the folk-rock legend will be performing with a group called The Chrome Hearts that features Promise of the Real drummer Anthony LoGerfo and bassist Corey McCormick, as well as Lukas’ younger brother, Micah.

While Micah Nelson isn’t a member of Promise of the Real, he joined the band when they backed Young on multiple tours and albums during the 2010s. Micah also played with Young’s longtime backing group Crazy Horse as a touring member in 2023 and 2024.

Pre-sale tickets for the Port Chester concert are available now. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, September 7, at 10 a.m. ET.

The shows will take place just a few days after Young plays the 2024 edition of the annual Farm Aid benefit concert. This year’s show will be held on September 21 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York. Other artists on the lineup include Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Margo Price, Mavis Staples, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, and Lukas Nelson with The Travelin’ McCourys.

Young Currently Has One Other Confirmed 2024 Performance

As previously announced, Young also will be playing at the 2024 edition of the Harvest Moon: A Gathering benefit concert. The event will take place October 5 at the Painted Turtle camp in Lake Hughes, California.

Neil’s former Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young bandmate Stephen Stills also is part of the lineup. The concert will raise money for two charities—The Painted Turtle and The Bridge School.

The Painted Turtle, which was founded by late actor Paul Newman, offers a free camp experience to chronically ill children and their families. The Bridge School, which was co-founded by Young’s late ex-wife Pegi, is an educational facility for young people with physical and speech impairments.

The first Harvest Moon: A Gathering benefit concert was held in 2019.

Cancellation of Young and Crazy Horse’s Tour Dates

Young initially had plans to be on the road with Crazy Horse on the Love Earth Tour throughout 2024. After playing 15 shows with the band in April and May, though, Neil announced in June that the remaining scheduled concerts with Crazy Horse were canceled.

In the Zoom conference, Young explained that at some point during the trek, he didn’t feel right about continuing.

“My body was telling me, ‘You gotta stop,’” he noted. “So I listened to my body.” Neil also said that some other members of Crazy Horse weren’t feeling well during the tour.

He added, “Crazy Horse will be back, God willing, and we’ll play more.”

Young Shared Planned for His Upcoming Theater Concerts

Also during the Zoom, Young shared some details about the upcoming theater shows he’ll be playing.

“They’re mostly theaters that I’ve played before,” he noted. “There I can play a little bit of acoustic, and then have the band come out and play. I did shows like that back in the day, and they were cool. … They won’t be marathons. They won’t be, like, two hours and 10 minutes of blasting rock ‘n’ roll like it was with Crazy Horse.”
