Adam Ellis, an admin of former BitTorrent tracker OiNK, has just been charged with conspiracy to defraud. OiNK was once a popular site for illegal music downloading. As such, the site was shut down by Dutch and British authorities in October 2007 in a sting called “Operation Ark Royal.” The operation was led by British and Dutch police who received tips from anti-piracy groups suspicious of OiNK’s behavior.
The charges against Ellis have been pending since December of 2007 due to factors including a lack of evidence and requests for delayed bail. Today, however, Cleveland police made the charges official. Rather than an expected charge of copyright infringement, Ellis is accused of “conspiracy to defraud the music industry.” Details regarding this charge are few at the moment, but are expected to surface within the next week.
In other OiNK news, four former users of the torrent tracker have been arrested for crimes of copyright infringement, particularly uploading. One of the accused is a 25 year old man from Middlesbrough. He and the other accused are expected to appear in court later this month.
Ellis’ trial is set for September 24, and we will keep you updated as new details arise.
