PETER PAUL AND MARY > The Solo Recordings (1971-72)

After nearly a decade as America’s premier folk group, Peter, Paul and Mary decided to (temporarily) split up; this collection presents the first albums Peter Yarrow, Noel “Paul” Stookey, and Mary Travers released as solo artists. And you can readily imagine any of the songs being on a PP&M record, though each album does have its own character due to each performer’s distinctive vocals.

Politically-themed songs remain a constant; “On The Path Of Glory” (on Mary), “Give A Damn” (on Paul and), “Don’t Take Away My Freedom” (on Peter), balanced by love songs to wives and other loved ones – including Stookey’s most popular solo number, “Wedding Song (There Is Love),” a staple at wedding ceremonies since the day it was released. The performers are also supported by a stellar lineup of musicians; Paul Butterfield and members of The Band on Peter, and John Denver on Mary (Travers also records two of Denver’s songs, as well as “I Guess He’d Rather Be In Colorado,” a year before Denver did). The songs don’t rival PP&M’s best work, but each artist is still capable of holding their own.
