Rosanne Cash had numerous hit singles throughout the 1980s. Her many hits include โSeven Year Acheโ, โBlue Moon With Heartacheโ, โRunaway Trainโ, and more. But one of her most poignant songs is โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ. Out in 1985 on her Rhythm & Romance record, Cash wrote โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ with her then-husband, Rodney Crowell.
โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ says in part, โI’m in the right mood, I’ve got my new shoes tonight / I don’t know why you don’t want me / I’ve got my new dress, I couldn’t hurt less tonight / I don’t know why you don’t want me.”

The song sounds like itโs about someone pining over a relationship. However, that isnโt what inspired Cash to write the song. She was actually facing what felt like a massive rejection from the music industry when she had the idea to write โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ.
What Inspired Rosanne Cash to Write โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ
When Cash had the idea to write โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ, she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female, for โAinโt No Moneyโ, a song she released in 1982. Her second nomination, the trophy went to Juice Newton for โBreak It to Me Gentlyโ instead.
Heartbroken over the loss, Cash was driving on Hollywood Boulevard when she began writing โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ in her head. Cash went home and told Crowell the idea. He responded by saying, โThatโs good, letโs work on it together.โ
Cash wrote โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ immediately, but it took a while for her to record it. Vince Gill sings with Cash on this song.
In an ironic twist of fate, Cash won her first Grammy Award, also for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female, in 1986 for โI Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ. Newton was also nominated in that category for โYou Make Me Want To Make You Mineโ.
“I Donโt Know Why You Donโt Want Meโ was also nominated for Best Country Song. That trophy went to Jimmy Webb for โHighwaymanโ.
Rhythm & Romance also includes “Never Be You”, “Hold On”, and “Second To No One”, all hit singles for Cash. In 2015, Cash won three more Grammy Awards. She won Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance, both for “A Feather’s Not A Bird”. She also won Best Americana Album for The River & The Thread.
