Heartbreak is an inevitable fact of life that can bring one to their knees. However, this pain can bring a sense of comfort, and one thing that amplifies that comfort is music. Of course, music bridges experiences and makes one feel less alone. Though, in addition to that attribute, it also just makes the heartbreak all the more romantic. Every single genre of music has and will continue to accomplish this feat. However, one genre of music that has consistently been doing so for years is 2000s indie rock.

Maybe it’s the angst in the sound or the solace in the lyrics, but there is something about indie rock that just perfectly matches the sickening sweet sentiments of a broken heart. That being said, here are three indie rock songs that make heartbreak feel oh so sweet.
“You Found Me” by The Fray
The Fray’s 2009 single, “You Found Me”, can make one think that their failed romance is the subject of a blockbuster romance film. It’s epic, cinematic, and hits all the right pressure points. Needless to say, the song is moving, and it seems the masses agreed with that fact, as the single acquired loads and loads of success following its release.
After the single’s 2009 release, it peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Furthermore, it also peaked at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart. To this day, the single remains as one of The Fray‘s biggest hits and rivals their other top songs “How To Save A Life” and “Look After You”.
“Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon
In their heyday, the Kings Of Leon were the absolute masters of ornate and grand heartbreak songs. In addition to “Use Somebody,” the band churned out popular singles “Closer” and “Revelry”. However, their biggest all-time hit to this day is their 2008 classic, “Use Somebody”.
Released in 2008, “Use Somebody” made it to the top ten on several of Billboard’s most prominent charts. Most notably, the single peaked at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also peaked at no. 1 Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.
“Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls
“Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls was released in 1998, however, this song ruled the 2000s airwaves and helped establish the 2000s indie rock movement. The single remains a standalone classic not only for this reason, but also thanks to its bittersweet message and epic delivery.
After its release, the single peaked at no. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at no. 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks, Alternative Songs, and Adult Top 40 charts. Though more importantly, “Iris” is an emotional crutch and a dash of sweetness amid the ever-so-bitter taste of heartbreak.
