The change, which effects U.S., U.K. and EU subscribers (Canadian prices stay the same), impacts the price of the introductory-level subscription bracket, eMusic Basic, which previously provided 30 downloads per month for $9.99. Now eMusic Basic will be available for $11.99 starting today. However, users already subscribing to eMusic Basic will have a month to get used to the shift as stated previously, in addition to receiving 10 extra downloads per month to ease the pain.

Why the change? eMusic Chief Executive, David Pakman explained that in the five since the company changed ownership many changes have been made concerning the overall quality of the service provided by eMusic. Upgrades such as the addition of millions of new tracks and as Digital Music News put it, a “major editorial overhaul” are the reason for the price increase. More perks, more moolah.

The newly-announced changes will have no effect on higher-level subscriptions, so, serious customers signed up for eMusic Plus and Premium plans will continue paying the same price per month.
