Sometimes it seems like no matter how sweet a love song is, it just doesn’t quite fit. Songs about young love aren’t going to feel exactly right for a couple that has been together longer than the singer has been alive. At the same time, an ode to one’s wife of 10 years may not be the perfect fit for a first date. With that in mind, we’ve gathered some situation-specific country love songs to add to your Valentine’s Day playlist or dedicate to that special someone.

1. “I Just Want to Dance with You” by John Prine is a Great First Date Song

“I Just Want to Dance with You” is a great country love song for a first date. It’s not too serious and doesn’t pack a ton of serious lyrics about making a love that will last forever. Instead, it’s a fun, light-hearted tune about spending an evening on the dancefloor.

John Prine wrote the song with Roger Cook and recorded it for his 1986 album German Afternoons. George Strait recorded the song for his 1998 album One Step at a Time if you’re looking for something with a little more twang. It’s all up to taste. You can’t go wrong with either.

2. “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)” by Chris Young Helps Things Get Steamy

Countless couples around the world will be getting to know one another a little better for the first time this Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for something to set the mood or let your partner know just how much you’re looking forward to what comes after dinner look no further than “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)” by Chris Young. While it still counts as a love song, this is more like the country version of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”

The lyrics of this song walk the tightrope between suggestive and sweet and Young’s silky smooth voice is the cherry on top.

3. “Sleeping Alone” by Flatland Cavalry Is the Perfect Song for Long Distance Love

Long-distance relationships are hard. It doesn’t matter if one is away for work or if living situations keep lovers apart, the distance and time away from one another is never easy. This is one of a few country songs that encapsulates the longing, loneliness, and love that come from being separated by miles of highway.

Flatland Cavalry frontman Cleto Cordero likely wrote this song from experience. He and his wife, Kaitlin Butts, are both touring musicians. So, it’s safe to say they spend more time apart than they’d like. The longing in his voice in this track really drives the feelings home.

4. “Believer” by Pug Johnson Is the Perfect Country Love Song for the Lady Who Showed You the Light

Some guys have their lives together when they find “the one.” Others are pretty sure they’d be completely lost without her and this song is for those guys. It’s a sweet love song and a great way to thank the one you love for saving you from yourself.

Country singer/songwriter Pug Johnson wrote this tale of being saved by love from personal experience. On one hand, “Believer” is the story of his relationship with his wife. On the other hand, it’s a widely relatable tune for guys who were a little (or a lot) rough around the edges before finding “the one.”

5. “I’d Love You All Over Again” by Alan Jackson Is the Perfect Song for Longtime Married Couples

Just because you’ve been together for more than a decade doesn’t mean the spark has to be gone. There’s always room for a little romance, even if it looks different than it did at the beginning of the relationship. “I’d Love You All Over Again” is the perfect song for those couples who said “I do” years ago and are still going strong.

Jackson wrote this song for his wife Denise after their 10th anniversary. As the story goes, he was on the road doing a radio tour. While watching it rain through a hotel room window in Arkansas, he started reflecting on their decade of marriage and it inspired him to write what might be the sweetest country love songs.
