Sometimes, a musical masterpiece really doesn’t take long to create. For these four iconic songs from classic rock’s past, it only took about 30 minutes to write them. And they’re still considered some of the most legendary songs of all time. Let’s take a look at a few classic rock songs you probably know by heart that were written in only 30 minutes!

1. “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath
Few songs from Black Sabbath are as memorable as the 1970 heavy metal track “Paranoid”. We’re not exactly surprised that it only took the band about 30 minutes to completely write and compose. Everything was lightning-fast back then for Black Sabbath.
According to Geezer Butler, “Paranoid” was “written as an afterthought” as the band needed three minutes to fill out the album. Tony Iommi came up with a riff and Butler wrote the lyrics, and Ozzy Osbourne basically sang them as he read them. The rest is history.
2. “Yesterday” by The Beatles
This is a pretty shocking entry on our list of rock songs that were written in 30 minutes. “Yesterday” is one of the most memorable songs of the 20th century, after all.
According to The Beatles’ Paul McCartney, the melody for the song came to him after waking up one morning. He hummed it for the next couple of days to try and figure out if his subconscious stole it from another song or if it was original. The actual songwriting took about half an hour to put together.
3. “Rock And Roll” by Led Zeppelin
While working on “Four Sticks”, John Bonham got particularly angry over being unable to count in properly. In his frustration, he decided to take a half-hour break and drummed a bit on his kit. He started with a variation of a Little Richard song called “Keep A Knockin’”.
However, in just a matter of thirty minutes, that riff evolved into what we know as “Rock And Roll” today. Jimmy Page simply improved a riff over it, and the song became one of the most well-known Led Zeppelin tracks of all time.
4. “Life On Mars” by David Bowie
This is quite a poetic song, so it’s a bit surprising that “Life On Mars” by David Bowie is an entry on our list of rock songs that were written in 30 minutes. The song came to Bowie like a slingshot to the head, but the song itself was based on work he had heard years prior. Inspired by a French song by Claud Francois, Bowie turned it into a sort of version of “My Way” by Frank Sinatra.
That song was turned down, so Bowie decided to make his own spacier version instead. Today, “Life On Mars” is one of Bowie’s most recognizable songs.
