Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and Patsy Cline are a few of the notable country musicians from the 20th century who have passed on. Another integral figure to add to that list is the one and only Glen Campbell. You likely know Glen Campbell, but if you don’t, his most famous hits include “Wichita Lineman”, “Southern Nights”, and “Rhinestone Cowboy”. His career was decorated to the highest of degrees, and today, in 2017, was when he put a period to it.

On this day, June 9, in 2017, Glen Campbell released his final studio album, Adiós. Prior to the release of this album, Campbell had not taken the stage since 2012 and had not released an album since 2013. This was primarily because Campbell received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in late 2010. Despite the diagnosis, Campbell got to work, as he actually recorded his final studio album between 2012 and 2013 at the infamous Station West in Nashville, Tennessee.
Years later, Campbell decided to release his final studio album on June 9, 2017. Campbell seemingly released the album years later because his condition was worsening, thus, Adiós was a farewell to his fans. Following its release, the album debuted at No. 40 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 7 on the Top Country Albums chart. Though far more importantly, it was Glen Campbell’s swan song.
Two Months Later, Glen Campbell Tragically Passed Away
Two months later, on August 8, 2017, Glen Campbell passed away at 81 years old. Campbell tragically passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, and was buried in the Campbell family cemetery in Billstown, Arkansas.
Campbell’s impact on both country music and contemporary music as a whole is truly beyond words. As a musician, Campbell helped artists such as Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and The Monkees. He is also one of the main reasons country music hit the mainstream with as much force as it did and continues to do so.
While the majority of Campbell’s career is incredibly significant, today marks an uber-significant day. Not just for Campbell, but for all of music. On this day, Campbell raised his hand and said goodbye to the world and all of his fans. He remains and will continue to remain as one of the most influential artists of all time. His influence on country and mainstream music is invaluable in every sense of the word.
