On This Day in 2024, We Said Goodbye to This Country Music Songwriter Who Fathered Two Heavy Metal Legends

As far as musical sibling duos go, it doesn’t get more iconic than heavy metal drummer Vincent “Vinnie” Paul and guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Each considered at the top of their respective craft, the Texas-born brothers co-founded heavy metal titans Pantera in 1981, followed by Damageplan in 2003. Both came by their musical talents honestly, as their father, Jerry Bob Abbott, was a well-respected country songwriter and record producer. Jerry, who produced Pantera’s earliest albums, died on this day (April 2) in 2024 at a caregiving facility in Denton, Texas. He was just six days shy of his 82nd birthday.

Born in Abilene, Texas, on April 8, 1942, Jerry Bob Abbott was playing the piano by age 8 and the guitar by 15. After graduating high school at 18, he joined a local band and toured across Texas before working with numerous resident bands at local nightclubs.

Obtaining a business degree, Abbott began work as a sound engineer for a local recording company in 1973. Nine years earlier, he had married Norma Adkisson. The couple welcomed their first son, Vincent Paul Abbott, in 1964, followed by Daryl Lance Abbott two years later.

For Jerry Bob Abbott, Music Was a Family Affair

Before helping initiate his sons into the music industry, Jerry Bob Abbott found success as a country music songwriter. His resume includes Don Gibson’s “Let’s Get Together” (1975); “If You’re Ever in Texas” by Freddy Fender (1976); and the 1979 Buck Owens-Emmylou Harris collaboration “Play Together Again, Again.”

As a father, he nurtured his sons’ burgeoning interest in music, teaching Darrell to play songs like Van Halen’s “Runnin’ With the Devil” on guitar when he showed a sudden interest at about 11 years old.

Noticing his children’s natural musical aptitudes, Abbott became determined to help them break into the industry. “This isn’t something that might happen if we work on it—it’s a for-sure thing,” he told Guitar World in 2010.

As his sons built Pantera and honed their musical talent, Abbott handled the business side of things. After producing the group’s first four albums, he stepped back once Pantera landed a major-label deal with Atco Records in 1989.

“You know, we never had a father/son relationship, ever. We were friends,” Jerry said. “I treated my kids with respect and treated their talents the same way. I helped them every way I could as a friend.”

Both Jerry Bob Abbott’s sons preceded him in death. On Dec. 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was fatally shot during a performance at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie Abbott died of natural causes at his Las Vegas home on June 22, 2018. He was 54 years old.
