No matter how independent we think we are, we all yearn for home. Whatever that word means for each of us, we all have a place we long for in the hard times. If you ever feel yourself being pulled back home, the three country songs below offer a momentary reprieve. They may not be “home,” but they certainly dose us with nostalgia.

“I Called Mama” (Tim McGraw)
We all need to hear the comforting voice of a parental figure from time to time. It’s a longing we don’t quite understand until we’re old enough to be on our own. All of a sudden, a sharp pang starts to hit your heart. Nostalgia breaks through, and we can’t help but pick up the phone and call the one person we know can fix it.
In Tim McGraw’s “I Called Mama,” the artist gets some bad news. The only thing he can think to do is dial his mom’s number. It does the trick, giving him comfort from miles away. From now on / I ain’t gonna wait so long, he sings in this country song, sending his love back home.
“Coat of Many Colors” (Dolly Parton)
Speaking of motherly comfort, we can’t forget to mention Dolly Parton‘s ode to her mom: “Coat of Many Colors.” My coat of many colors / That my momma made for me / Made only from rags / But I wore it so proudly, she sings in this country song. We may not all have lived the same upbringing at Parton, but the sense of belonging she talks about in this song is familiar.
“My Front Porch Looking In” (Lonestar)
We all have a place that we feel most comfortable. No luxury destination or dream vacation can measure up to it. No matter where we go in life, we can’t help but make the journey back home.
According to Lonestar, there is no better view than looking into your house from your front porch. There’s a carrot top who can barely walk / With a sippy cup of milk / A little blue-eyed blonde with shoes on wrong / ‘Cause she likes to dress herself, the chorus to this tender country song reads. A band like Lonestar has surely seen it all, but even they long for home.
