3 One-Hit Wonders That Just Make Me Laugh

When it comes down to it, a good one-hit wonder is supposed to be singular, a one-of-a-kind. They’re unique, often quirky. And some just plain make you laugh. They get inside and give you the giggles. Why? Because of that je ne sais quoi, that ineffable essence that makes them stand out and bring out a chuckle or a chortle.

We wanted to highlight three examples of that here. Three songs from the one-hit wonder canon that induce a laugh. Sometimes it’s intentional, but occasionally it’s unintentional, but no matter what, the quirky characteristics of the tune always bring out a guffaw. Indeed, these are three one-hit wonders that just make us laugh.

“Surfin’ Bird” by The Trashmen from ‘Surfin’ Bird’ (1963)

On its own, this song, which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, would summon a laugh, what with its rapid-fire delivery and silly winged subject matter. But what makes it even more over the top is that it’s eternally associated with the edgy comedy cartoon Family Guy. The main character of the show, Peter Griffin, makes a big deal about the earworm song. It’s since become a meme and a favorite internet clip. Humor on top of humor.

“The Purple People Eater” by Sheb Wooley (Single, 1958)

One of the songs you hear every Halloween, this track describes a cartoonish monster from outer space. Sung in a cartoonish voice, the tune is both vivid and childlike. It’s perfect for the spooky season, and it’s meant to make you laugh while you sing along. It’s one of those songs that’s so simple that everyone gets it, but it’s somehow also never been replicable. Sheb Wooley stumbled upon greatness with this one-hit wonder, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Who Let The Dogs Out?” by Baha Men from ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’ (2000)

The humor comes from the chorus of this song, which is repeated over and over and includes dog bark sounds. Of course, this track from the turn of the millennium is very catchy, which is what made it hit No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release. But not only is the chorus silly, it’s also become a running joke amongst people between the ages of 25 and 45. It’s become just something you say whenever someone actually lets a dog out. Classic.
