The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs formed in Saskatchewan in 2004, and have since brought a retro, guitar-driven style to modern rock. According to lead vocalist Ewan Currie, speaking to National Post in 2015, the band has aimed to “land in the sweet spot in between Led Zeppelin and Crosby, Stills & Nash.” They were the first unsigned band to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone, and have gone on to release eight albums, the most recent being a live album in 2022. Listen to The Sheepdogs if you like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, or The Allman Brothers Band.

Dirty Honey

Dirty Honey formed in Los Angeles in 2017 and pull from more distinct classic rock and roll. In 2019, they became the first unsigned band to top the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart with their single “When I’m Gone”. Since then, they’ve produced two studio albums and a slew of singles that demonstrate their grasp of classic styles. Check out Dirty Honey if you like Guns N’ Roses, Van Halen, AC/DC, or Aerosmith.

The Struts

The Struts formed in Derbyshire, England, in 2012 and went on to release four studio albums, along with several EPs and live albums. In 2014, they opened for the Rolling Stones, leading to longer U.K. tours and more sold-out shows. Frontman Luke Spiller is often compared to Freddie Mercury for his elaborate stage presence, showmanship, vocals, and clothing. His clothing, specifically, was designed by Zandra Rhodes, who once also dressed Mercury. The Struts are a must for anyone who likes classic rock artists like Queen, the Rolling Stones, or David Bowie.

Rival Sons

Rival Sons formed in Long Beach, California, in 2009. Since their start, they’ve released eight albums, making them a staple group in the modern classic rock scene. In particular, Rival Sons cites The Roots, Prince, and D’Angelo as influences, and they possess a bit of a southern rock flavor akin to a heavier Lynyrd Skynyrd. They’ve also mentioned Howlin’ Wold, Muddy Waters, and Sly and the Family Stone, with frontman Jay Buchanan often citing Van Morrison as one of his heroes.
