5 Nirvana Deep Cuts That Never Got the Spotlight They Deserved

Grunge band Nirvana’s discography isn’t exactly large, but it’s large enough to host a few deep cuts that even diehard fans may have never heard before. Let’s take a look at just a few Nirvana deep cuts that we think are worth discovering (or revisiting)!

1. “Old Age”

“Old Age” is a rare example of Nirvana’s more relaxed side, as well as Kurt Cobain’s sentimentality. This outtake from Nevermind could easily be the band’s most underrated track, but that’s completely up to fan opinion. Those hooks are on another level, though.

2. “Curmudgeon”

This B-side to “Lithium” deserves way more love, and we have to say it is one of our favorite Nirvana deep cuts out there. “Curmudgeon” is a raw, energetic track that could have easily ended up on In Utero. Nirvana doesn’t have many songs one could describe as anthems, but this one comes close.

3. “I Hate Myself And Want To Die”

This “Pennyroyal Tea” B-side is on the more playful side of Nirvana’s discography… if you consider distorted guitars, gritty lyrics, and dark song titles playful. Fun fact: “I Hate Myself And Want To Die” was originally going to be In Utero’s album title.

4. “Opinion”

Out of all the Nirvana deep cuts on this list, “Opinion” is a little bit of a mystery. This song was never recorded in a studio, and it was never performed at any of Nirvana’s live shows. There are a few post-Cobain versions of it, but the true version is a bootlegged solo demo that Cobain played on a radio show.

It’s a stellar song about Cobain’s dislike for the media, and it’s a great example of what the famed frontman could do with just his voice and an acoustic guitar. Though, we already know that from MTV Unplugged.

5. “Verse Chorus Verse”

Nirvana deep cuts don’t get better than this, folks. “Verse Chorus Verse” is an outtake from Nevermind that never made it to the album, but it’s become quite a fan favorite over the last couple of decades. Fortunately, this charming track was released with the band’s With The Lights Out comp album.
