5 of the Most Dangerous Live Rock Acts in History

Plenty of bands through the years, particularly in the rock genre, have been labeled as “dangerous”. Often, that label is given by more conservative listeners who would clutch their pearls at a swear word or reference to something taboo. But some rock acts through the years have actually been quite dangerous during their live performances. Let’s look at five examples from rock history, shall we?

1. Sex Pistols

Sex Pistols made a name for themselves with their music, as well as their destructive on-stage presence. Their live shows included everything from half-naked dancing to trashing stages to bonking unsuspecting concert-goers with their guitars. 

At one point, they had to perform under pseudonyms to keep the coppers from canceling their performances. When they toured the US, they were only allowed to perform in the southern states due to their colorful past, and they didn’t have many fans there to begin with.

2. GG Allin

When it comes to dangerous live rock acts, we’re kind of required to at least mention the controversial GG Allin. He was a well-known figure in the punk world known for his particularly violent acts on stage. 

His live shows were full of debauchery, nudity, and violence. Today, Allin is remembered fondly by some old-school punks and labeled as a provocateur who made terrible music by others. If you want to look up more about him, tread with caution.

3. The Stooges

Often considered the first punk band to spearhead the movement, The Stooges had the punk rock attitude to match their proto-punk sound. 

Iggy Pop had no qualms with hitting the stage at the early Michigan shows in skimpy outfits and leotards. A lot of listeners and concert-goers weren’t happy about that in the 70s, and many of their shows involved everything from violent confrontations to self-harm to on-stage food fights. They shined bright and burned out within just a few years, though Iggy Pop hasn’t slowed down in the decades since.

4. Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath may be known as the godfathers of metal, but out of all the rock acts on our list, they didn’t pose much of a “dangerous” risk to their fans during live shows. At least, no more than any other metal band that could rile up a crowd of angry youths. 

Rather, Black Sabbath were more of a threat to themselves; and bats, of course. Ozzy Osbourne decapitated everything from live bats to doves (allegedly), and we’re all very fortunate that they didn’t jumpstart a pandemic a few years earlier.

5. The Birthday Party

Australian post-punk outfit is known by many music fans as Nick Cave’s first ride on the path to international attention. Others know it as that band that attracted particularly dangerous crowds during live sets. They were even labeled at one point as “the most violent band in the world”. No-good thugs and even white supremacists would show up to their shows and attempt to incite riots at their gigs.

“We had started to reject the initial in-your-face aggressive concept of The Birthday Party because we just had all these people coming along who were just there to fight,” Nick Cave said of the band’s early years.
