Behind Prince’s Wild Backstage Rules: “I Literally Saw Him Fire a Guy for Looking at Him”

Prince was and always will be a very mysterious figure. At his core, he was an incredibly dedicated artist. Thus, he did things his way, he did things his way so he could make the vision in his head turn into a physical reality. However, according to one source, the way he went about doing so was unfair, high-maintenance, and pretty peculiar. Though, how can you argue with genius? Well, some would say you can’t.

Given Prince’s conviction and artistic intensity, he was seemingly one not to be fooled with. That being so, when people did fool with him or interfere with his creative practices, they typically would feel his wrath to the fullest extent. As a matter of fact, as the rumor goes, Prince once fired one of his employees for simply looking him in the eye.

Prince’s Rules—Fact or Fiction?

The story about Prince firing an employee for looking him in the eye comes from an article on Notorious Magazine. A former Prince employee told the publication that “no crew members were allowed to look at him or talk to him.”

“I literally saw him fire a guy for looking at him,” the employee added, per Vulture. “He just said, ‘Why is that guy looking at me? Tell him to leave.’”

However, like many stories of this nature, this one was seemingly blown out of proportion. That being so, Prince’s former hairstylist, Kim Berry, set the record straight in an interview with ABC 20/20.

“A lot of people, before I started working for him, gave me a lot of rules,” Berry stated. “And years later, after I had been employed by him, he asked me, ‘What did they tell you when you first started working for me?’”

Berry divulged to Prince that his former employees told her that he was high-maintenance and ultimately hard to work with. Prince denied all these claims and replied to Berry that he thought it was “hilarious that people make up stuff.”

According to Berry, these rumors and false rules merely attempted to heighten Prince’s mystique. When in reality, he “just wanted to be treated regular” and “never required anything.”

Well, per the anonymous source, Prince was a really difficult person to work for. However, according to Berry, he was an absolute delight. Who knows which version of the story is true? But regardless, Prince was and always will be a legend, and his charismatic weirdness helped cement him as such.
