Indie rockers Grizzly Bear have inspired Doobie Brother Michael McDonald.

Former Doobie Brother and solo artist extraordinaire Michael McDonald has a new man crush: Grizzly Bear.

McDonald covers a version of the indie group’s new single “While You Wait For The Others” on the B-Side to the band’s rendition. The Brooklyn band surprised the world with the news by not telling anyone. “While You Wait For Others” is the second single from what is proving to be the band’s biggest album, Veckatimest. You can pick up a copy of this strange rock curio here.

Hip-hop superstar Jay-Z is also down with the Grizzles, it turns out. He and his bride Beyonce caught the band during a recent free show at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn.

The Jigga man told MTV News, “[Grizzly Bear is] an incredible band. The thing I want to say to everyone– I hope this happens because it will push rap, it will push hip-hop to go even further– what the indie rock movement is doing right now is very inspiring. It felt like us in the beginning. These concerts, they’re not on the radio, no one hears about them, and there’s 12,000 people in attendance. And the music that they’re making and the connection they’re making to people is really inspiring. So I hope that they have a run where they push hip-hop back a little bit, so it will force hip-hop to fight to make better music. Because it can happen. Because that’s what rap did to rock. When rock was the dominant force in music, rap came and said, ‘Y’all got to sit down for a second, this is our time.’ And we’ve had a stranglehold on music since then. So I hope indie rock pushes rap back a bit because it will force people to make great music for the sake of making great music.”

  1. Jay-Z has been known to collaborate with music producer 9th Wonder (Mary J. Blige, Destiny’s Child, Nas, etc).
9th Wonder has been known to collaborate with E Jones.
E Jones discovered Doobie McDonald and sent him music to write and sing on.
Doobie McDonald wrote and sang on the music, then sent it back.
9th Wonder and E Jones mixed and produced it.

“Peek-a-Boo (I See You)” is the name of that collaboration.
It can be download HERE FOR FREE.

Also, make sure to check out Doobie McDonald’s Whittier City Council Meeting, where he sang to the smiling Mayor.
