Singer and guitarist John Mayer is currently in talks with CBS about a potential variety show the musician would host, according to a statement issued by CBS network president of entertainment Nina Tassler at a meeting with the Television Critics Association yesterday.

According to Tassler, the two parties are very close to working out some kind of deal.
“It will be a music variety/sketch show,” Tassler said. “It’s being developed now.”

If the show makes it to the airwaves, it will not be Mayer’s first attempt at TV. In 2004 he hosted his own talk show miniseries on VH1, John Mayer Has a TV Show. Mayer was also a guest on CBS favorite CSI in 2006.

Comedy is no stranger to the guitar slinging pop rocker either, as Mayer has found a hobby in stand-up comedy as a means of taking a break from the busy musician lifestyle.

Fans who wish Mayer would just focus on his music need not be too concerned. In a November blog post, he wrote, “I’m working on the next CD, which I’m sure you will immediately hate until you eventually love. I’m basing out of L.A. because I’m working on a side project that is extremely cool (I’ll tell you about it soon).”

No further details, such as a title or potential airdate, have been released about the show.
