“I was convinced that if I moved to a different label that I’d make a different record,” Vanderslice tells Billboard.com. “I’d been with Barsuk for so long, I had a thing with them. I wanted to rattle the cages a bit. I think it’s only a good thing if you’re pushed out of your comfort zone.”

Vanderslice, who recorded the album at his home studio, Tiny Telephone, in San Francisco, employed as many tricks as he could to get fresh results in his songwriting. “I started to look at doing drastic key changes within the song as a developmental tool,” he says. “That was different too, because you start to listen to old Steely Dan records or old Beatles records and you’re kind of amazed at how complicated the stuff is.”

Vanderlsice’s split EP with the Mountain Goats, Moon Colony Bloodbath, is available now.

Last year, Vanderlsice posted this discovery on his website:

I discovered today that the chords of “Fool On The Hill” line up exactly with tuning a guitar, starting from the top E down. In other words…I’m still recording! And besides the Beatles, there’s so many other ways to fill those breaks and gaps in between thinking and writing.

Here’s the track list for Romanian Names:

“Tremble and Tear”
“Fetal Horses”
“C & O Canal”
“Too Much Time”
“D.I.A.L.O.”
“Forest Knolls”
“Oblivion”
“Sunken Union Boat”
“Romanian Names”
“Carina Constellation”
“Summer Stock”
“Hard Times”
