In the first verse of “Sultans of Swing”, Mark Knopfler knowingly growls that “you feel alright when you hear the music ring.” Fans are about to feel all kinds of alright as Knopfler lets the music ring on Get Lucky, a new solo album due out September 1

Get Lucky is Knopfler’s eighth solo album, and the followup to 2007’s Kill to Get Crimson. Knopfler says of the album’s title, “the first itinerant person I ever met would sing in soul bands in winter, then work part-time in fairgrounds or ‘go pick fruit down south’ when the weather turned warm,” explains Knopfler. “I was about 15 years old, stuck in school and envious. ‘Get Lucky’ came from him and other traveling characters I went on to meet in places I’d find myself working short-term, like farms, warehouses, building sites, before I got lucky with my songs.”

Now 59 years old, and 14 years removed from his last performance with Dire Straits, Knopfler hasn’t yielded an inch to time. In 2006, he released the critically acclaimed All the Roadrunning, a collaboration with Emmylou Harris that showcases surprising chemistry and reminds folks that the man Rolling Stone named the 27th greatest guitarist of all time still knows how to deliver the goods.

Knopfler plans to tour behind the album in 2010.
