Since striking gold with his 2018 single “Whiskey Glasses,” Morgan Wallen’s main competition on the country music charts has been mostly himself. Despite earning the CMA’s coveted Entertainer of the Year Award, Wallen has long had a fraught relationship with the genre. And during a recent interview, the “I’m the Problem” crooner, 31, admitted there isn’t a whole lot of country music on his playlist.

Morgan Wallen Talks Zach Top, His Relationship With Country Music
On the heels of a painfully awkward (and quite viral) Saturday Night Live appearance, Morgan Wallen sat down with Theo Von on the latter’s This Past Weekend podcast. Topics discussed ranged from the pitfalls of fame to today’s country artists. However, turns out Wallen didn’t have a ton to add to that conversation.
“I don’t listen to country music a whole lot. I think I’ve always kind of been that way,” the man with 13 chart-topping country singles casually revealed.
Despite his lack of listening, Wallen agreed with Von’s assessment that rising country star Zach Top is “very solid.”
Footage from the interview is making the rounds on social media, with predictable results. “Wallens listeners don’t listen to country music either,” remarked one TikTok user.
Another lamented that Wallen’s confession was “exactly what’s wrong with current country music.” “That’s why his songs have hip hop drum machines in the background,” they wrote. “Keep country country.”
However, the “You Proof” singer did have his defenders. “Say what ya want but Morgan Wallen is fun,” one TikTok user wrote. “Be happy. There’s room for everyone.”

Regardless of whether you found this information shocking, one thing is for certain—Morgan Wallen continues to polarize listeners.
Wallen Is Still Avoiding Bars
Last week’s abrupt SNL exit wasn’t the first time Morgan Wallen made headlines for something other than music. Last April, the “I Had Some Help” singer was famously arrested in downtown Nashville after throwing a chair from the rooftop of Eric Church’s bar, Chief’s.
The monthslong legal saga came to an end in December, when Wallen pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in Davidson County court. In the meantime, he is apparently steering clear of such establishments.
” I ain’t been in a bar since the last time I was in a bar that everybody knows about,” he told Von.
