RADNEY FOSTER AND THE CONFESSIONS

Revival

(EMERGENT/92E)

[Rating: 3.5 stars]

Like fellow country mavericks, Crowell and Earle, Radney Foster has gone indie with his new release. That sobbing you hear is coming from various boardrooms of the labels that didn’t snap his new gem up.

From the unrepentantly loud guitar of “A Little Revival,” Foster clearly has his dander up, along with his hopes. “Everytime I think I’m lost,” he sings, “God always sends someone down just to stir things up.” With the next tune, “Forgiveness,” it’s clear the guy has gotten religion. Unlike many self-appointed spiritual figures, though, Foster is posing questions, not preaching answers. After hearing the prayerful “I Made Peace With God,” or the inspiring “Life Is Hard (Love Is Easy),” you may just find the strength to stir a few things up yourself.
