“Rednecks With Money Is a Real Dangerous Undertaking”: Brooks & Dunn Recall the Craziness of 90s Country

While the 1990s featured hit bands like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Alice in Chains, for Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, it marked the start of the country music duo Brooks & Dunn. Although both were singers and songwriters, they took the advice of producer Tim DuBois and decided to join forces. Formed in 1990, it took only one year before they released their hit single “Brand New Man”, which went No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs charts. While continuing to travel and perform, the duo recently discussed what it was like being in the music industry during the 1990s.

Sitting down with Vice, Brooks and Dunn loved taking a trip down memory lane. And although the 1990s were just a few decades ago, according to the singers, it was a different time as Brooks said, “I won’t even get started on all the crazy crap that we did.” He continued, “Rednecks with money is a real dangerous undertaking.”

Taking a minute to remember some of the times they shared together, Brooks explained, “It really makes me feel good now for people to be talking about our music because from the ugly shirts that we wore to the crazy confetti to just swinging from the rafters, literally, the fact that nobody seems to be talking about that.”

Kix Brooks Remembers How Big The Tours Got

As for Dunn, he mostly remembered the instant surge in popularity. With their fanbase growing and concerts selling out, the singer said, “The next thing you know you’re running from a bus with 13 guys on it and a trailer behind you, or one semi, to you know nine or 10 semis and eight buses.” He added, “It’s amazing to me that there’s still that many people out there that don’t understand how big it got and is.”

Jumping back to their first tour, Brooks offered a glimpse into the size of their concerts. “I think our first tour with Reba [McEntire] we had 19 trucks and 21 buses out there it was a big bunch of stuff to haul around.”

Not ready to hang it up just yet, Brooks and Dunn currently wait for the release of their newest album, Reboot II, scheduled to release on November 15th.
