The Shure SM7 is a dynamic moving coil microphone with a cardioid polar pattern that, despite its modest price tag and original intention as a speech microphone, has found its way onto many modern rock and r&b recordings. Famous for its use as Michael Jackson’s vocal mic on Thriller, the best selling album of all time, the SM7 has also been employed for vocals by Raphael Saadiq and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The SM7 can be found in many recording studios parked in front of a kick drum, bass cabinet, or guitar amp. Part of its versatility can be attributed to two switches that augment its 50Hz-20kHz frequency response. The first is a low roll-off switch that starts at 300Hz, and the second is a “presence boost” between 1kHZ and 10kHz that adds some extra intelligibility to vocals or guitars. The SM7 is an ideal choice for home recording situations due to its polar pattern, which rejects sound from the rear and sides, and its shielding against electromagnetic hum from fluorescent lights or computer monitors. If you don’t have an ideal space to record in, the SM7 may be your best bet.
