Legendary drummer Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street band thinks he has found a suitable replacement for his spot in the band on Springsteen’s current tour: his son.

As leader of the Max Weinberg 7, the house band for Conan O’Brien, Weinberg will be making the move to California as they take over “The Tonight Show” on NBC this June; Springsteen’s tour runs through August.

Weinberg’s nineteen-year-old son, Jay, who played drums on “Born to Run” last summer at Giants Stadium, will step in for his dad, but it remains to be seen if he shares his father’s famous capacity for remembering Springsteen’s songs — Weinberg has said that he knows over 1,000 songs by the New Jersey native and can play them all on command. Whether or not his son will have that ability remains to be seen, but if drumming ability is a genetic trait in any way, we’re sure he’ll do just fine.

Addressing the dual roles of Max Weinberg, Bruce Springsteen said in a statement: “I want to express my appreciation to Conan O’Brien and everyone on his team. We promise to return him in one piece.”

  1. Jay was AMAZING!! Saw him at the 5/21 Meadowlands show and he was just as good, if not better than his dad! So much energy and excitment from this “kid” and you could tell Bruce and the E-Streeters wer so proud of him! Still love Max, but a BIG fan of Jay now too! He will definitely go far in his music career!

  2. Saw 5/15/09 Hershey PA show. Jay was great with the E St Band and from what I see on YouTube he’s gotten even stronger in very short period of time. As a fan, thanks to Bruce, the band and Jay for filling in. I checked out Jay’s myspace page and listened to Jay’s other endeavors… check him out.
