Check out this vintage video (from all the way back in 1995) of Steely Dan, being interviewed in various locales around New York City.
The Seventies smooth rock icons, who are currently on tour revisiting old albums like Aja and The Royal Scam, discuss their songwriting, including how their views of certain hits have changed over the years. “I had real trouble with ‘Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.’ I don’t understand what the lyrics mean anymore.” deadpans Dan co-leader Donald Fagen.
Watch the interview unfold as they go hunting for vinyl, discuss their unlikely origin story, and walk by the Brill Building, where they picked up their first publishing contract.
The duo also visit Fagen’s old apartment on President Street in Brooklyn. “That’s the window out of which our iguana escaped.”
