Much has changed for the California-based band since the release of Time Does Not Heal. They’ve gone on hiatus twice. First, the band split in 1992 and came back together in 1999. Six years later, they split again before reuniting again in 2013. Unfortunately, guitarist and founding member Jim Durkin died in March 2023. However, the band is keeping his spirit alive with the lead single from their next album. Durkin penned “Extinction Level Event.”

Gene Hoglan on Dark Angel’s New Music

Longtime Dark Angel drummer Gene Hoglan spoke about the new tunes in a press release. “Musically, lyrically, and vocally, I’m so stoked about this album,” he shared. “I’m really excited about Dark Angel right now, and everyone who’s heard the new album is losing their minds,” he added.

Hoglan also revealed that the band didn’t choose the Jim Durkin-penned title track as the first single for sentimental reasons. Instead, they chose it because it represents what the band will bring to the table later this year. “Jim Durkin left us with this badass tune. It is so Dark Angel and I’m just so excited about it,” he said. “We made it the lead-off song on the record, not as a tribute to Jim or because of sentimental reasons–like, ‘Here is the song that Jim left us’–but because it’s just a totally killer song,” he added. “He wrote it ten years ago, and by today’s standards it’s still ball-crushing.”

The band hasn’t shared a release date for Extinction Level Event yet. However, Hoglan said it will come out someitme this year.
