Tommy Prine and Contrary Western Cooked Up Something Speacial This Holiday Season: Watch ‘A Stock Music Christmas’ Today

Most know Tommy Prine as a singer/songwriter and the son of the late great John Prine. This holiday season, though, he’s showing the world a different side of himself with A Stock Music Christmas Special. Prine shows off his comedic side as well as his acting chops in the short film that is part holiday special, part horror comedy, and completely off-the-wall.

For the third year in a row, Prine teamed up with Contrary Western to create something special for the holiday season. However, A Stock Music Christmas Special is their most adventurous and ambitious outing to date. The short film sees Prine lured to an abandoned cabin in the woods for a songwriting retreat. However, when he gets there he finds himself alone with a kitchen stocked with vegetables, one pot, and a note that reads “low and slow.” He spends the next six months trying to make the perfect soup, refusing to return to civilization until he does.

With Christmas on the horizon, his friends, management team, and a documentary crew go to the cabin in an attempt to convince Prine to come home for the holidays.

A Stock Music Christmas includes musical performances from Prine, Vince Herman, Reggie the Soup Dealer, and Frank Rische.

Tommy Prine and Contrary Western on A Stock Music Christmas

Tommy Prine and his collaborators at Contrary Western spoke exclusively to American Songwriter about A Stock Music Christmas.

“Every year, when the world starts to wind down, I get together with my friends at Contrary Western,” Prine said. “Luke, Sam, and I had a conversation about perfectionism in creativity and the similarities between songwriting and cooking. This year we took on our biggest project yet, to shed light on this message that we feel affects us all. We are so excited to share with you all what we made! Happy Holidays, friends,” he added.

A Stock Music Christmas is our third holiday special with Tommy. Collaborating with him from the start, it was clear that we wanted to touch on the connection of food and music, which both build community, and explore themes around creativity and perfectionism,” the Contrary Western team shared. “Seeing Nashville artists come together, sharing songs and stories, and speaking to the function of music in our lives was an especially meaningful way to wrap the year. Though we might have strayed away from brevity on this one, the hope is that viewers will take stock in levity being the soul of wit,” they added.

A Stock Music Christmas premieres today (December 23) on the Contrary Western YouTube channel.
