During the final show at the Astrodome, Strait played some of his biggest hits and best-loved songs. “Amarillo by Morning,” “I Just Want to Dance with You,” “The Chair,” and many more made the setlist. “Write This Down,” the Texas native’s biggest hit from the 1990s, appeared early in his setlist. Watch him perform the crossover hit for a record-breaking crowd below.
George Strait Scores a Crossover Hit with “Write This Down”
Written by Dana Hunt Black and Kent Robbins, George Strait released “Write this Down” in 1999 as the second single from his album Always Never the Same. The song became his 38th No. 1, topping the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for four consecutive weeks. It also climbed to No. 27 on the Hot 100, giving him one of his biggest crossover hits. “Write This Down” was also his final No. 1 of the 1990s.
More than a highly successful single, “Write This Down” is an example of what had made George Strait one of the most beloved country singers of the last half-century. The Ace in the Hole Band’s flawless instrumentation hooks the ears of traditional country fans. Then, there’s Strait’s silky smooth voice. More than anything, though, the song is both relatable and catchy.
It’s hard to hear “Write This Down” and not have the chorus lodged firmly in your head for hours if not days to come. At the same time, nearly everyone has been where the song’s protagonist is: being surprised by the end of a relationship and professing his undying love.
The combination of the song’s elements makes it more than an enduring hit. It exemplifies why so many people love Strait and his music.
