To qualify for nomination, artists must have released their first single or album 25 years ago. Over 500 musicians, industry professionals and music journalists will vote to select five of the nine nominees to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Those names will be announced in January, with the induction ceremony taking place April 4, 2009 in Cleveland.

For the first time in its history, tickets to the awards ceremony will be made available to the public. Members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will get the first shot at the seats, then the rest will be released to the masses. Tickets will also be available for the series of events taking place the week prior to the ceremony in celebration of its return to Cleveland after spending the last decade in New York.
