A People’s History of American Songwriter: Brittney McKenna

Most of the best things in my life came about by accident, and getting the opportunity to work with American Songwriter was no different. When I was a freshman in college, I applied for an editorial internship on a whim, turning my application in late (as is my standard operating procedure) and using what had to have been a pretty pretentious comparison of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and some religious poem that I can’t remember the name of as my writing sample. For whatever reason, Matthew brought me on as an intern anyway, and the rest is history. Since then, American Songwriter has provided some of the cooler moments in my life, including the opportunities to talk with some of my favorite artists, to spend too much time thinking about music and to make a living doing what I love. That last one, especially, isn’t wasted on me, and I’ll be forever grateful to everyone on the AS team for helping to make it happen.
