We all know the feeling. You’re sitting in front of your computer screen, scrolling through your media player or YouTube or some other service, and you’re looking for something—anything—that will offer you a thrill. That will put a smile on your face. Maybe even push you to get up out of the chair and dance. You know what might help? Classic rock!

That’s right, the genre was practically created to make people feel good. From its explosive, 4th of July-like guitar sounds to the rolling drums and rumbling bass, the music envelopes its listeners and provides oomph and power to all in range. Here, we wanted to look at three examples of that. Indeed, these are three classic rock songs from the 70s that just make you feel good.
“We Will Rock You” by Queen from ‘News Of The World’ (1977)
Did someone say they needed a song to pump them up? Well, if so, you’ve come to the right place. The simple drum beat, which you can do with your hands and feet, opens into a triumphant war chant about defeating whoever is in front of your face. Sung by Freddie Mercury and his British-born band Queen, the 1977 track “We Will Rock You” is practically medicinal. When you feel down, take two in the morning and prepare for your heart to feel two sizes bigger.
“Mr. Big Stuff” by Jean Knight from ‘Mr. Big Stuff’ (1971)
As soon as the music begins, you feel 100 pounds lighter. The tone of Jean Knight’s voice, the flow and feel of the music, it’s like you’ve been put inside a movie about you starring you, where there is a happy ending just for you. While the subject matter of the track is about some guy who thinks he’s cooler than he is, it almost doesn’t matter. Knight is transcendent and uplifting. You’re in a cloud of appreciation, and you just want to do right by those who put you there.
“Layla” by Derek And The Dominos from ‘Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs’ (1971)
As soon as that first guitar riff comes in, you’re thunderstruck. If you look up “classic rock” in the encyclopedia, this track may just be at the top of the definitional list. It’s a raging, rampaging rock rollick that rolls over you in the best of ways. Masterful guitar work mixes with powerhouse vocal delivery. It’s a love song that mixes passion with desperation—what else could be better for your spirit in need of a little energetic infusion?
