Country music is country music, it is completely self-sufficient and has existed successfully on its own since its inception. However, when country music is featured in a blockbuster artistic film, it is a match made in heaven. That being so, here are three country music films to take home Hollywood’s biggest prize, an Oscar.
‘Walk The Line’
Walk The Line is arguably the most popular country music film of all time. Directed by James Mangold, Joaquin Phoenix portrays Johnny Cash in his early years exceptionally well and it paid off immensely. However, where it really paid off is in Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal of June Carter Cash.
Following its 2005 release, the film got a lot of buzz in regards to its music and general production quality. However, it was Reese Witherspoon who acquired the film an Oscar, as she walked away with the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
‘Crazy Heart’
Released in 2009, Crazy Heart stars Jeff Bridges, Colin Farrell, and Maggie Gyllenhaal and portrays the comeback of a broken down and boozed drowned country musician. Country music aside, the film deals with themes of self-destruction, ambition, and ego and the consequences they all entail.
That being so, none of those themes would have been articulated if it wasn’t for the one and only, Jeff Bridges. Matter of fact, it was Jeff Bridges who also acquired the movie its one and only Oscar. For his role as Bad Blake, Jeff Bridges won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
‘Tender Mercies’
Any movie Robert Duvall acts in turns into an intimate and dramatic piece of gold, and that is the exact case for his 1984 film, Tender Mercies. Directed by Bruce Beresford, the film follows a similar storyline to Bridges’ Crazy Heart. Though, despite the redundancy, the film was still massively successful.
Following its release, the film took home two Oscars. First, Robert Duvall took home the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Secondly, the screenwriter, Horton Foote, won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
