“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X from 7 (2019)

This song went through many lives and iterations before it became the smash hit that’s since garnered nearly 1.5 billion views on YouTube alone. But for our purposes, we will focus on the 2019 release, which features country star (and Miley’s dad) Billy Ray Cyrus. The song when it was released was groundbreaking, bridging country music and hip-hop sensibilities. It also made Lil Nas X a star and household name. Who hasn’t put the track on and sung the first few stanzas in a low baritone, dancing with Lil Nas X as he croons,

Yeah, I’m gonna take my horse to the old town road
I’m gonna ride ’til I can’t no more
I’m gonna take my horse to the old town road
I’m gonna ride (Kio, Kio) ’til I can’t no more

I got the horses in the back
Horse tack is attached
Hat is matte black
Got the boots that’s black to match
Riding on a horse, ha
You can whip your Porsche
I been in the valley
You ain’t been up off the porch now

“Royals” by Lorde from The Love Club EP (2012)

Speaking of songs that made musicians celebrities, this track from the New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Lorde put her on the map and has kept here there ever since. A song about youth and wealth gaps, this was the perfect hit for a new generation of music listeners when it was released. First dropped in 2012, the song was commercially released in 2013 and blew up. It’s since garnered nearly 1 billion streams on YouTube since. And one reason for its popularity is the joy people get singing the chorus, on which Lorde belts,

And we’ll never be royals (royals)
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of luxe just ain’t for us
We crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me Queen Bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule
Let me live that fantasy

“Hello” by Adele from 25 (2015)

While no one has a voice like Adele, her largesse as a singer somehow still engenders others to sing along. And this song with its simple title and familiar subject matter (love lost) makes for the perfect song to both relate to and sing loudly as you’re driving down the highway or just doing chores around the house. On the remorseful song, Adele sings about distance with the hope of reconnection, offering,

Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried
To tell you I’m sorry for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore

Hello, how are you?
It’s so typical of me to talk about myself, I’m sorry
I hope that you’re well
Did you ever make it out of that town where nothing ever happened?
