3 of the Craziest Fan Theories About Musicians

1. David Bowie predicted Kanye West’s fame

David Bowie’s album cover for The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a sweeping city scene full of a ton of detail. But, if one thing stands out (especially in a modern context), it’s the bright yellow “K. West” sign in the foreground. Many fans have believed that this sign was an act of precognition from Bowie, wherein he nodded to the forthcoming career of Kanye West. Though it would be decades before West made it onto the music scene, he was born shortly after the release of this album. Conflating West’s career with an album about an incoming threat on the world….We have to think there was some bias against West at play here.

There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He’d like to come and meet us
But he thinks he’d blow our minds
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He’s told us not to blow it
‘Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile

2. Elvis Presley faking his death

No one wants The King to be dead. Even decades after he passed, fans still mourn Elvis Presley. But, some feel that mourning is unnecessary. Countless fans believe that Presley is still alive. From aliens to the mafia, the theories are abundant.

Why can’t you see
What you’re doing to me
When you don’t believe a word I say?

We can’t go on together
With suspicious minds (with suspicious minds)
And we can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds

3. Phil Collins saw someone letting a man drown

Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” has become one of his calling cards. But, there is a morose fan theory that clouds it somewhat. Many fans have pointed to the lines below as some sort of confession from Collins–one that dictates that he either watched someone drown and didn’t help or was a third party viewer to such a circumstance. Of course, that seems to be nothing more than speculation.

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I’ve seen your face before, my friend
But I don’t know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you’ve been
It’s all been a pack of lies
