There are few Directioners that can’t boast knowing every single song that One Direction put out over their tenure. Being a fan of the boyband in their heyday wasn’t a casual affair. You lived and breathed One Direction.

However, if you’re a new fan, you might not have reached the depths of their discography. Whatever brought you to the One Direction sphere–whether it be the band members’ solo careers or the tragic loss of Liam Payne–use these four songs as a jumping off point for your newfound fandom.

4 Deep Cut One Direction Songs New Fans Should Check Out

1. “I Should Have Kissed You” (Up All Night)

We’re starting our list of One Direction songs at the natural point: their first album. This deep cut from Up All Night is pure pop perfection. There is very little grit to this track–and that’s exactly how we would want it. It’s blithe listening at its best. Though the lyrics concern heartbreak, the melody certainly does not follow suit. Try to sit still when this one comes on.

Is your heart taken?
Is there somebody else on your mind?
I’m so sorry, I’m so confused
Just tell me, am I out of time?
Is your heart breaking?
How do you feel about me now?
I can’t believe I let you walk away when
When I should have kissed you

2. “Magic” (Take Me Home)

One Direction avoided the sophomore slump with Take Me Home. This album was just as well received as their first work–perhaps even more so. Among the stellar track list is “Magic.” This jaunty tune has everything you could ask from a boyband: playful lyrics, danceable melody, and heartthrob sensibilities.

‘Cause you, you’ve got this spell on me
I don’t know what to believe
Kiss you once, now I can’t leave
‘Cause everything you do is magic
But everything you do is ma-a-agic

3. “Something Great” (Midnight Memories)

“Something Great” is a little weightier than the first two inclusions on this list. It reflects their growing maturity. The chorus sees the fivesome ask the universe for something great to fall into their lives–particularly in the relationship department. The instrumentation in this track is rich. The listener feels engulfed by the wash of instruments and lush harmonies.

I want you here with me
Like how I pictured it
So I don’t have to keep imaginin’
Come on, jump out at me
Come on, bring everything
Is it too much to ask for something great?

4. “Once in a Lifetime” (Four)

Lastly on our list of underrated One Direction songs, we have “Once in a Lifetime.” This song is as existential as this boyband gets. The vocals on this song reflect the emotional core of the lyrics. It reminds the listener to stop and smell the roses. After all, only once in a lifetime is everything just right.

When I close my eyes
All the stars align
And you are by my side
You are by my side

Once in a lifetime
It’s just right
And we are always safe
