“It’s Embarrassing”: Why Oasis Hates Being Compared to the Beatles

They’re British and are an all-male band, so of course, Oasis is often compared to The Beatles. They also haven’t exactly done themselves any favors regarding this comparison, as Noel Gallagher boldly stated, “Lennon was right. And we are bigger than Jesus. We will be as big as the Beatles, if not bigger.” Additionally, Liam Gallagher said, “What [Oasis] did in three years took [The Beatles] eight,” per NME.

Given these quotes, Liam, Noel, and Oasis deserved all the smoke they received. After all, if you mess with a musical giant, you must expect to get stepped on a time or two. Nevertheless, The Beatles do reside in a holy place in the hearts of the brothers, as they drew a lot of inspiration from both their lives and their music. Despite their affinity, they are not a fan of the comparisons for on premier reason.

Oasis’ Lack of Talent Compared to the Fab Four

Even though Oasis’ polarizing comments incited critiques and comparisons, their style itself also did the same. Thanks to their vocal melodies, harmonies, and general aesthetic, they were often compared to the fellow British band prior to their quotes. Noel attested to the fact saying, “When Oasis started, we were so big we were compared to [The Beatles] size-wise and musically, embarrassingly, compared to them as well,” per The Beatles: Get Back.

The first two elements Noel acknowledged are unsurprising and make sense. However, the final one is something surprising and rather vulnerable when realizing it’s coming from the hard-nosed Noel Gallagher. “[It’s embarrassing] because we weren’t as good as them,” Noel added. Well, there you have it Beatleheads, Noel Gallagher finally admitted the very thing you’ve seemingly wanted to hear ever since their polarizing claims.

Their Deep Affection for The Beatles

“[The Beatles] mean everything to me” and “They’ve definitely got the best tunes, hands down,” shared Noel. He also divulged, “They influenced everybody who influenced everybody else, who influenced everybody that came and went” and “Their influence is absolute. I don’t know a single guy playing the guitar or writing songs that wouldn’t cite the Beatles as an influence.”

Given these comments, it seems Noel acknowledges that if The Beatles didn’t exist, neither would Oasis. And, everybody knows he is not the only artist who believes that. Regardless, Oasis seemingly doesn’t like to be compared to the greatest band of all time given that The Beatles have an untouchable stature.
