On February 13, 2011, many people were at home enjoying the Grammy Awards. Morgan, on the other hand, had just returned to his hometown of Dickson, Tennessee after playing a few shows on the road. He and his family were out and about and had stopped to get gas. The family smelled smoke but didn’t think much of it. One of his children said there was a house on fire. Morgan assured him that someone was likely just burning trash. Then, he and his wife saw the roof of a house burning.

Craig Morgan Springs Into Action

According to Taste of Country, Craig Morgan and one of his sons approached the house. Then, the homeowner came out screaming that her kids were inside. So, Morgan sent his son to find a hose so they could douse the home while he went inside.

“I ran in the house and it was smoked up,” Morgan recalled. “There was one guy, probably 10 years old or so and he ran from me, of course. He was terrified because of the smoke. Another child came out of the bedroom and I grabbed him and gave him to the mom,” he added.

He and his son then used the water hose to keep the flames from spreading until the volunteer fire department arrived. Thanks to his actions, everyone got out safe and the home only sustained minor damage.

Morgan said he used the incident as a way to teach his kids an important lesson. “I told my kids, ‘When you see something like that, that’s what you do,” he said. About his role in rescuing the kids, the “Almost Home” singer said, “I did what anyone else in the same position would have done. I just happened to be the one that was there.”
