Remember When a Beatles Fan That Tried to Ship Herself to the Band?
Beatlemania was something that was never before seen and has yet to be usurped since. Though many bands in the modern age have earned their fair share of love, nothing has been quite as era-defining as the fervor surrounding the Fab Four.
For evidence of that claim, consider 12-year-old superfan Carol Dryden. Dryden was a young English girl who was obsessed with her homegrown heroes: the Beatles. Instead of following in the footsteps of her fellow Beatles fans–i.e. attending shows or swarming their hotels–Dryden decided to add a little ingenuity to her fandom.
Dryden took things to the extreme, concocting a plan to be shipped to the Beatles, bypassing any red tape that might keep her away from the objects of her affection. She, quite literally, hopped into a crate and addressed herself to the Beatles headquarters in London.
Though this seems like a far-fetched plan, she did make it to the train station before she was intercepted. Good thing too, as Dryden forgot to punch any air-holes in her crate…Things could’ve gone terribly wrong, but in the end, it proved to be a light-hearted story of fierce fandom that Dryden likely entertained her friends with for decades.
Dryden wasn’t the only Beatles fan who went to great lengths to be near their favorite band. There are stories of fans breaking into Paul McCartney’s house and even a rabid listener attempting to stab George Harrison. And, of course, there is the “fan” that murdered John Lennon. These stories range from blithe to heart-breaking, but they all speak to the record-setting attention this band received. Few bands have caused as much of a fuss as the Beatles did in their heyday.
