One of the most exciting groups to come out of this year’s South By Southwest was a Nashville band that billed itself as Luella and the Sun.

A supergroup of sorts with a brooding, barebones sound, Luella offered an electrified rethinking of raw, pre-War blues and gospel. Singer Melissa Mathes (originally from Milwaukee) released a solo record under her own name in 2009, while guitarist Joe McMahan has a list of production and session credits that include Allison Moorer, Mike Farris and Kevin Gordon.

McMahan and Mathes, along with bassist Adam Bednarik (Lambchop) and drummer Jon Radford, have developed a powerful live show, and American Songwriter is excited to co-present the band at Evanston SPACE on Wednesday July 10, 2013.

The Chicago songwriter Ryan Joseph Anderson (Go Long Mule) will open the free show. RSVP and watch Luella’s scorching take on Blind Willie Johnson’s “The Soul Of A Man” below.
