Experimental indie rockers Animal Collective may already have a new album, Merriweather Post Pavillion, due in stores early 2009, but that isn’t stopping the group from diving right back into a new project.

This newest (and currently untitled) offering from the Baltimore rockers is not only going to be their most experimental yet, but will also feature a visual element that is already two years in the making.

“It was going to be a film, like a feature film, but by no means a narrative,” Animal Collective founding member Dave Portner (also know as Avey Tare) tells Billboard.com. “It’s more collaborative, between us and our friend Danny Perez, who did one of our music videos.

“This year, we got to a place where we can start doing demos and nailing all the sounds down, while we’re at home,” Portner continues. “It’s something new for all of us. It’s been a work-as-we-go process.”

The film is a collaboration with Danny Perez, who has worked with the band several times before, and will showcase more of the band’s artistic abilities than any previous effort.

Merriweather Post Pavillion hits shelves January 20, followed by so much hype that a rumored cell phone recording (suspected to be from a fan at a listening party) is floating around on message boards. The band will also tour Europe and the U.S. in support of the album.
