Brooks & Dunn is one of the most popular duos in the history of country music. The duo started their career in 1991 with an unheard-of string of No. 1 singles. Since then, they’ve watched the genre change and grow which means they’ve watched artists come and go. For instance, they remember when Taylor Swift was a country artist before she became the biggest pop star in the world.

Recently, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn sat down with American Songwriter to talk about their upcoming collaborative album Reboot 2, the state of country music, and more. During the conversation, they shared their opinions on the impact Swift has had on the genre over the years.
Brooks & Dunn Discuss the Impact of Taylor Swift on Country Music
American Songwriter correspondent Cindy Watts asked Brooks & Dunn, “Do you think Taylor Swift’s contribution to country music has affected the genre? If so, is it for better or worse?”
“I think it’s for the better,” Dunn replied. “She came in as a country artist and that thread is still very much there,” he added.
“She’s a really good songwriter,” added Brooks. “Regardless if you’re not a pop fan of hers, which there’s not many young girls who are not. When she was here as a bona fide country artist, she wrote all those songs herself. I don’t know anybody who wouldn’t say that she’s a really good songwriter because she is,” he added. “And, you know, all the rest of it, the antics she has, the stadiums, and the whole Taylor Swift world, it’s like Barbie big. That’s a whole different world of its own,” he said of Swift’s level of current fame.
However, Dunn pointed out that Swift hasn’t let her worldwide fame go to her head. “Taylor’s still down-to-earth, though. She’s there for a reason. Sincerity is a powerful weapon in authenticity and she’s that,” he explained. Indeed, Swift still takes time to interact with fans during her concerts and is quick to show her gratitude to those who helped her get where she is today on social media and beyond.
