Buffalo Springfield Reunion Highlights Packed Bridge School Benefit

Videos by American Songwriter

Neil and Pegi Young’s Bridge School Benefit has always been one of the coolest concert bills around, and this year was no different. Highlighted by a reunited Buffalo Springfield, the weekend-long concert, which benefits disabled children, featured acoustic sets from Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse, Grizzly Bear, and many, many more. Merle Haggard was forced to cancel due to illness.

For Buffalo Springfield first gig in more than forty years, Young was joined by Stephen Stills, Richard Furay, CSN drummer Joe Vitale and Young bassist Rick Rosas for songs like “For What It’s Worth,” “Burned”, “Rock N Roll Woman,” and “Mr. Soul.”

Pearl Jam played two sets over two nights, covering Patti Smith’s “Dancing Barefoot,” and joined Neil Young for the Le Noise track “Walk With Me.”

Also on hand were Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne, Kris Kristofferson, Modest Mouse, and T Bone Burnett’s Speaking Clock Review, featuring actor Jeff Bridges, Neko Case, Ralph Stanley, Costello, and Elton John and Leon Russell.

  1. It was a fantastic event. I was at the Sat performance. Too many highlights to name but Buffalo Springfield was the highlight for me. Pearl Jam also played a powerful set augmented by a string section & spec guest Neil on his new Walk With Me song. Also Buffalo Springfield’s bass player is Rick Rosas aka Rick the bass player. Rick has had a long career playing with Joe Walsh & now Neil Young. He also is in Waddy Wachtels’s band. The highlights for me of the Springfield’s set would be Nowdays Clancy Cant Even Sing with Richie Furay & Neil trading verses and Neil’s I Am a Child. What a band! I had waited most of my life to see them. As a very young music fan in the 60’s with AM radio & KHJ Boss Radio surveys I had missed my chance to see them. Way too young. But this was a magical reunion. Sometimes these things dont work out this well. Another highlight for me was Elvis Costello w/ surprise duet partner Emmylou Harris! They performed a number of Everly Bros songs & were joined by Neil & Kris Kristofferson during the set. What a special event. This is the 1st one I’ve attended & kudos have got to go to Neil & Pegi Young + Shoreline Amphitheatre. Yay
