Veteran Nashville tunesmith Chris Gantry’s latest album, his first in a good long while to my knowledge, brings novelty songs back to the limelight with spunk and sheer wit. For listeners expecting thinkers like Gantry’s late ‘60s classics “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife” (a Glen Campbell hit) and “Sundown Mary” (a Billy Walker hit), they won’t find them here; but this collection warrants attention-in this day and age where novelties, sadly, have lost their luster in country music. There are enough one-liners in “Marriage of Pope Paul to Flipper” (“Have you ever dined on mice and baked cigars?”) alone to make even the most sour person crack a smile. “Foo On You,” which chronicles the trials and tribulations of Percy (son of “Big Bad John,” kin to “A Boy Named Sue”), is downright hilarious.

  1. Hi Chris – It’s so great to hear about your new album! Can’t wait to hear it. I’m a blast from your past. We met when you were living in Acuff’s old house. I was living with Patty Thompson, George Turner’s girlfriend at the time. You guys gave me a copy of Motor Mouth and I still have it. I have turned on many many people to Nashville Jack Magic and sll the rest! I hope you are doing well and best of luck with all of your projects. Laura

  2. Chris,
Flashback to a short time in the ’60’s – Whitebridge Road & Derby Lane – my 3 toddlers – your Honda 350 & the impossible task of teaching me guitar on the steps of the Parthenon. I’ve prayed for you for 45 years and thanks to the internet, have found you well and still true to yourself.
I would love it if you would touch base.
    Blessings – Cia
