Texas-based country singer/songwriter Dustin Brown is set to release his self-titled album on March 28. While it is his third album, the new release will serve as a solid introduction to the artist who sees himself as a poet and songwriter above all else. Today (March 12), American Songwriter is proud to premiere the new single “Burn.”

“Burn” is more than a pre-release sample of Brown’s forthcoming self-titled album. It is the record’s beating heart, the song around which he built the entire project. Ahead of today’s premiere, Brown sat down with American Songwriter to discuss the inspiration behind the song.
Dustin Brown Reflects on Growing Up in “Burn”
In recent years, Dustin Brown has thrown himself into full-fledged adulthood. After splitting from a long-term partner, he bought a fixer-upper house and began doing repairs and learning to care for–and take pride in–his lawn. At the same time, he’s made some major decisions about his future. He has been a musician “on and off” since high school. Now, though, he plans to stay the course and get serious about making music and living a good life. “Burn” sees him reflecting on entering his new stage of life, putting away childish behaviors, and making big steps.
“Coming of age and realizing that you don’t really matter. Not in a sad boy way, but growing up is realizing you’re not the center of attention,” Brown said. “There’s a point, I think, when you’re younger you’re the center of attention for your family and you can do no wrong. Everything you do is praised. Then, one day you’re a grown up and everybody is like, ‘Hey, go get a job,’” he added.
For a time, Brown said he was overly concerned about appearances. He looked back at the greats like Townes Van Zandt who embodied the “starving artist” lifestyle. Now, though, he realizes that isn’t a requirement. “I always feel kind of silly about everything I’ve been doing up to the past few years of my life,” Brown revealed. “Now, I’m more on track with doing what I want to do. I’m living a good life, I’ve still got a good job. It’s okay to make money and survive as opposed to living some destitute artist lifestyle,” he added.
Dustin Brown will be available to stream everywhere on March 28. “Burn” will hit streaming platforms later this week.
