Having honed their talents in the studio with the likes of John Vanderslice and the Watson Twins for their recent debut, the inevitable pairing of Russell Pollard and J. Soda (of Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, respectively) as Everest was a safe bet for the rock veterans. As such, their first full-length, Ghost Notes, is only a slight reflection of their indie roots and more an expression of their highly developed sense of engineering. Rather than blending their talents into the wild “blood on the walls” genre-breakers of Sebadoh, the duo take their cues from the songwriters they’ve become accustomed to, pulling out their, according to the liner notes, “Nashville-tuned” guitars and serving up a mild, though pristinely produced, batch of forgettable ballads.
