After being diagnosed with uvetis (one of the leading causes of blindness), musician Matt Drenik left the Austin-based rock band Lions and decided to channel his energy into a new project, Battleme. Taking his cue from Beck’s Mellow Gold and vintage Flaming Lips, Drenik hunkered down in his basement to write songs, and worked on creating a new, more experimental sound.

Listen to the infectious rocker “Reverse Projector,” from the digital release Green Fields Sessions, out September 11.

“It was last winter and my brother and I just decided that we should write some songs together,” Drenik tells American Songwriter. “I had some downtime with the new record coming out and figured if we were going to do it, we should do it now. Growing up it was always his bands that I’d hear about – the songs, the tours, the records. But now we’re older and in the big, bad world together so why not take a crack at making some pop gems that make us feel alive? And we just took it from there.”
