Glen Hansard And Lisa Hannigan Cover “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”

The deeply felt Americana music of The Band is not just appealing to Americans. Watch as Irish musicians Lisa Hannigan, collaborator John Smith, and Once star and solo artist Glen Hansard cover The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” for The AV Club in Chicago.

To Hansard, it’s a song that reminds him of a distant road trip. “Being in the middle of what I always hoped… on the road… I’m a singer, I’m listening to great music, and I’m in the middle of this beautiful landscape that is America.”

It’s an Irish supergroup of sorts, (where’s Damien Rice when you need him?), and reminiscent of the time earlier in the year when Hansard teamed with U2’s Bono for a stunning version of “The Auld Triangle.”
