Instead of the traditional short ceremony announcing the nominees for the Grammys, CBS said they will be having an hour-long TV special to announce this year’s contenders for the awards.

“The Grammy Nomination Concert Live!-Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night” will air on CBS on Dec. 3 and the Grammy Awards are set to be on Feb. 8. It will include nominations for at least six categories as well as performances from past winners at the Nokia Theater.

“This special will provide viewers a unique opportunity to witness a great live music event while enjoying the GRAMMY nominations, jump-starting the road to Music’s Biggest Night, the annual GRAMMY Awards in February, ” said Jack Sussman, executive vice president, specials, music and live events, CBS.

Other award shows announce their nominees, presenters and performers through short ceremonies that are usually aired as news stories.

“The ability to showcase GRAMMY-winning artists combined with the nominations for the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards represents a milestone for The Recording Academy as we begin the next decade of our important missions,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy.

The show will also feature the opening of the Grammy Museum in the L.A. Live complex.
